Youth Activities at Prince of Peace At Prince of Peace we take the education and development of our youth very seriously. When our youth reach the 7th grade they are finished with the traditional structured Sunday School classes but their education is far from complete. In 7th and 8th grade the students are involved in the Confirmation program. This two-year program teaches the students about their church, its history, the basis of their beliefs, and how the church fits into their daily lives. Once they have completed this program they are accepted as adult members of the church. While they are going through the Confirmation program the youth are encouraged to continue attending Sunday School. The 7th and 8th grade class is geared to run parallel with their confirmation. It enforces many of the lessons they are learning in confirmation. It also strives to relate their religion to their daily lives. Many of the discussions revolve around the daily activities in the students’ schools, their city, and the world. It is continually stressed that being a Christian is not just a Sunday activity but rather a 24/7 thing, all day / everyday. Each year the middle school youth go on a weekend retreat. This outing stresses group interaction and further reinforces the idea living a Christian life everyday. Real world situations are discussed and the students formulate their own answers. These activities allow the youth to strengthen their religious beliefs and fit them into their daily lives. To build the idea that it is not dull to be a Christian, we have a Middle School Youth Group. This group has ongoing activities to raise funds that are then use to fund their recreational activities. Bowling, horseback riding, skating, and sledding are just a few of the activities they enjoy. When the youth reach the 9th grade they move up to the High School Sunday School class. The students continue to grow in their religion and weave it into their daily lives. Current events and how these relate to the modern Christian are the basis of many of the class discussions. The High School Youth Group is active with many activities. These activities include camping trips, retreats, bowling, swimming, skating, and sledding. Each year youth travel to a college football game, which often allows them to visit some of their former classmates. The Middle School and High School groups work together on several events at Prince of Peace. They put on fund raising dinners and help at many church functions. Each year they spend several evenings putting on a Live Nativity Scene. What a person gets out of these activities is based on what they put into them but we try hard to insure that the opportunities are available. |
